Mapping out a student assignment plan

September 2, 2010
Opponents of the Wake County school board’s move away from decades of assigning students based on household income to filling schools neighborhood by neighborhood obviously have doubts about the plan.
But even those in favor of neighborhood school assignments have questions, mainly because the proposal is in its infancy. Regardless of where they stand on the issue, parents are no doubt hungry for details, curious about how it will work and where their children will wind up.
With that in mind, last month the school system made public several sample maps the board’s student assignment committee will consider as it works to group schools into zones.
The assignment committee has three criteria for the zones: they must be contiguous, they must create community schools and they should result in minimal reassignment.
The sample maps were based on current Wake County zones and show where campuses are located.
On Tuesday, the committee agreed to a proposal that divides the county into 16 zones based on current high school attendance zones.
