WAKE FOREST — American Legion members and scouts from Troop 517 conducted an American Flag Retirement Ceremony and retired over 600 American Flags on Saturday at the American Legion facility at 225 E. Holding Ave.

The process took several hours to perform. One of the many duties assigned to the American Legion is flag etiquette requiring the proper handling and disposition of American flags.

Legion Post 187 conducts formal classes on this subject and conducts flag retirement twice a year.

A mailbox receptacle is located alongside the American Legion building for public drop-off of used American flags. The purchase of replacement American Flags can also be procured at the American Legion facility.

The public is encouraged to purchase flags from the American Legion because any profit made from the sales are used to support veteran programs.
