WAKE FOREST — East Coast Drilling & Blasting Inc. on Monday began blasting and excavation operations on the site of the future Wegmans.

The store will be situated on the south side of Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass between US 1/Capital Boulevard and Siena Drive, just west of Ligon Mill Road.

Residents who live in the area are advised that blasting operations may continue for several months depending upon weather conditions and the amount of rock to be removed.

The blasting operations are expected to produce construction-related noise and sounds associated with demolition activities, but residents should not be alarmed.

Residents are advised of the following alerts both prior to and following a blast:

One-Minute Warning: Three long horn blasts, separated by short pauses.

All Clear Signal: A prolonged horn blast following inspection of the blast.

In October 2018 Wegmans announced plans to build an anchor store in Wake Forest as part of a larger mixed-use development by Stiles. Wegmans Wake Forest is expected to be up to 100,000 square feet in size and similar in design to Wegmans' other new stores.
