EMERALD ISLE — The body of a Wake Forest High School student was discovered early Monday at Emerald Isle, according to reports from multiple news organizations.
Police reportedly found Ian Frazier Lewis, 18, at 3:30 a.m. in the area of the 2800 block of the Emerald Isle Beach Strand.
Lewis, of Wake Forest, and another Wake Forest High student, Mary Paige Merical, 17, of Raleigh, were caught in heavy surf Friday at Emerald Isle beach, according to reports. Rescuers were able to save Merical and pull her from rough waters, and she was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
The Coast Guard and Emerald Isle authorities looked for Lewis on Friday before police announced Saturday it was suspending its search, according to reports.
A GoFundMe page was created over the weekend to raise money for Lewis' family. The page said the funds would go toward creating a wristband in Lewis' honor.
"On Monday the 22nd, at around 3:30 am, the body of our incredible guardian angel Ian was found in Emerald Isle," the page posted Monday morning. "During this low we would like to take a moment to thank everyone for the well wishes that his friends and family have received, and to thank everyone for the donations that we have raised so far.
"We’d also like to recognize Paige who is currently fighting for her life, and to please keep praying for both her and her family. Please remember that it is never too late to donate. All money raised goes to Ian’s amazing family. Thank you all."
The Wake Weekly will have more on this story in Friday's print edition.
