Cougar wrestler places second at states

GREENSBORO — Wake Forest’s Ronnel Wilson made it all the way to the state championship match for the 4A state wrestling tournament in Greensboro Saturday. The 195-pound sophomore finished second in his weight class.

Wilson’s state runner-up journey began in the first round where he defeated Green Hope’s Sebastian Whitesock by piling up 15 points on the mat. In the second round, Wilson defeated East Mecklenburg’s Christopher Dickey in an 8-3 decision.

In the state semifinals, Wilson narrowly defeated Cooper Carlson out of Corinth Holders in a 3-2 decision.

For the state championship final, Wilson was pinned by Lake Norman’s Caleb Tate in the second period. The sophomore finished his season with 26 overall wins.

Wilson’s teammates, Connor Voelker and Benjamin Lance, both finished sixth in the state tournament for their respective weight classes.

Another notable local wrestler was Heritage’s Cael Bergquist. The 106-pounder finished the state tournament in fifth place after pinning Hunter Jones out of Hickory Ridge in the second period.
