WAKE FOREST — Wake Forest’s wrestling program has struggled a bit this year, but one wrestler has remained constant all season.

Connor Voelker, the only senior wrestler on the squad, celebrated his 100th win of his high school career Jan. 15 after beating Wakefield’s Andrew Fanelly.

The 170-pounder pinned his opponent in the third period. Voelker has won 25 matches this year.

Wakefield ended up winning the overall match at Wake Forest 46-23. The Cougars had to give up two matches due to forfeit. The Wolverines dominated in the heavyweight matches.

Wakefield’s Elija Desouza defeated Wake Forest’s Jovany Lopez in a 10-6 decision for the 195-pound match. Jacob Bryant pinned Wake Forest’s Bennett Moore in the second period of the 220-pound bout. Finally, Gabe Alarcon gave the Wolverines another win by pinning Cole Sutphen in the first period of the 285-pound match.

Then on Saturday, Jan. 18, Wake Forest won two of their four matches in the Cougar Classic. The Cougars defeated Westover 39-18 and Apex Friendship 48-24. Wake Forest lost to Pine Forest 56-24 and Middle Creek 49-24.

Voelker won all four of his individual matches, extending his win total to 104.

Wake Forest will take on Heritage on the road Wednesday, Jan. 29.
