ZEBULON — Deputies said a man was charged with murder Sunday after another man was shot to death outside a party in Zebulon.

Mark Christopher Ray, 45, is being held at the Wake County Detention Center without bond.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said witnesses heard gunshots in the 800 block of West Barbee Street shortly before 3 a.m. The area is a commercial business that had rented a building for a private party that night.

First responders arrived and found 45-year-old Rodney Lucas, of Wendell, dead from gunshot wounds.

According to a press release, witnesses told deputies that an altercation broke out shortly after the party ended. The witness told deputies that Ray shot Lucas.

Ray, of Raleigh, was arrested Sunday on Louisburg Road in Raleigh "after an extensive search," a release said. Ray was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, records show.

Ray's past felony convictions include firearm possession, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and habitual felon.

Wake County Sheriff's Office detectives and the City-County Bureau of Identification are investigating the homicide.
