WAKE FOREST — Former Wake Forest High School girls basketball player Kayla Surles was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s women’s basketball player of the week as a guard for Hollins University.
Surles scored 17 points with nine assists against Washington & Lee on Dec. 4. Then she led her squad with 19 points and eight assists on the road at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Hollins University won both games to move up to 4-3 overall for the season.
Surles is currently second in points per game at 17.5 against conference opponents and 15.9 overall. She also leads the conference with 6.4 assists per game.
Surles win is the first ODAC Player of the Week for the Green and Gold since a member of the cross country team took home the award in September 2018. She’s also the first HU basketball player to win the award since Jasmine Green picked up the award during the 2012-13 season.
