A bridge in Franklin County will be replaced soon, according to a press release from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The structure is located on Person Road over Sandy Creek in northern Franklin County. The project could start as early as the last week of July and is expected to be completed in June 2020.
The current bridge, built in 1952, is being replaced because it has become functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means while remaining safe it requires extensive maintenance, no longer meets today’s traffic needs, and has vehicle weight limits, according to NCDOT.
The $1.4-million contract went to Fred Smith Company of Raleigh. This is one of six road and bridge projects recently awarded by NCDOT, at a cost of nearly $53.8 million.
