WAKE FOREST — Franklin Academy’s girls tennis team made their biggest run in school history, but suffered their first loss of the season to Pine Lake Preparatory 5-2 in the 1A state championship match at Burlington on Saturday.

Helen Brockmann and Kali Sibillia were the only two winners for the Patriots. Brockmann defeated Pine Lake’s Kailey Patel 2-6, 6-2, 10-2 in a battle between two freshman players at the No. 3 singles match.

Sibillia defeated Salem Matheson 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the No. 6 match.

Both Brockmann and Sibillia are the only two Franklin Academy players who finished the season undefeated. Brockmann went 15-0 this year and Sibillia finished 10-0.

Franklin Academy finished the year 17-1 overall and undefeated in North Central conference play at 4-0.

All of Franklin Academy’s starters, except for Ashlynn Stephan, will return next year.
