RALEIGH — Wakefield’s girls basketball team celebrated its senior night Tuesday with a 44-41 win over Knightdale to earn its second straight NAC 6 conference championship.
The Wolverines are still undefeated in conference play at 9-0. Knightdale was behind them at 6-2 in the conference, but then the loss dropped them down to 6-3, tied for second with Heritage.
Knightdale took the lead off the first basket of the game, but that was it for the rest of the night. Wakefield went into the second quarter up 12-2.
In the second period, the Knights made a bit of a comeback by outscoring the Wolverines 13-9. Wakefield held a narrow 21-15 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wakefield stepped it up on defense. The Wolverines outscored the Knights 15-5 to go ahead 36-21 into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Knightdale improved offensively by dropping 21 points. However, Wakefield scored just enough to stay ahead and closed out the night with a 44-41 victory.
Elise Williams led Wakefield with 23 points in the win. Jireh Reid contributed with eight points, including two 3-pointers.
Wakefield won the conference last year with an undefeated record of 10-0.
