Man charged with shooting into car, injuring woman on N.C. 97

WENDELL — A 23-year-old woman was struck by gunfire while riding in a car going down N.C. Highway 97 near Wendell Saturday, according to deputies.

One man has been arrested. The woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said it was called to the 100 block of Indian Trail just before 2 a.m. Saturday. The victim, Peyton Brooks, had been shot in the back and was taken to WakeMed Hospital for treatment, according to a press release.

Witnesses told deputies that Brooks and two other women were riding in a car on N.C. Highway 97 when two men began to follow their car. The men then began firing at the women's car. Brooks was the only one hit by gunfire, the release said.

Late Saturday, the sheriff's office announced it had arrested one suspect: Jonathan Joe Woodbury III. The 23-year-old Middlesex man was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and firing into an occupied vehicle. He is being held without bond.

According to a sheriff's office spokesman, the case is ongoing.
