Men charged with stealing tractors

SPRING HOPE — Deputies said they recovered two stolen tractors and charged two men with their theft.


The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office investigated after the tractors, a John Deere and a Massey Ferguson, were reported stolen April 24 off B&D Farm Road, near the Justice community.


Joseph Everett Powers, 57, and Stephen Edward Smith, 48, were arrested and charged with two counts each of felony larceny in connection to the case, the sheriff’s office said this week.


Powers, of Cypress Creek Road, Maple Hill, was placed in the Franklin County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond. He was also given a $5,000 secured bond on an outstanding Onslow County charge.


Smith, of Gurganus Road, Maple Hill, was placed in the detention center under a $250,000 secured bond.


The case remains under investigation with more arrests expected, the sheriff’s office said.
