Nyle Carl Hart, 87, passed away peacefully at his mountain home Sept. 11. He was surrounded by his wife, children and friends after suffering a massive stroke.
He was born April 19, 1932 in Green Cove, Virginia and was the baby of 11 children by Cora Hurley and Harvey Hart. As a child, Nyle worked with his father on the mountain farm where they ran a sawmill, made custom chestnut shingles and made soda pop. In the Depression, he was sent to work on his Uncle Hurley’s dairy farm in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. He attended elementary school at Mt. Rogers School, Green Cove, Virginia, Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, Virginia and graduated from Apex High School in Apex in 1951.
Nyle married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Denson, on Feb. 8, 1953 and completed airplane and engine school with an interest in helicopter mechanics in San Marcos, Texas.
He is an Army veteran of the Korean War (1954) and served 23 years as a sergeant in the Army National Guard working at the Army Aviation Support Facility at Raleigh Durham Airport for the 30th Armored Combat Team.
After his military retirement in 1973, he worked full-time on the family farm in Wake Forest raising beef cattle, hay, tobacco, Certified Seed grain and soybean crops.
Despite his quiet exterior and sometimes stubbornness, he was a die-hard Democrat, a daredevil, was adventuresome and was navigator for convoys for friends/family on many RV trips across the continental United States, including Hawaii and Alaska and all Canadian provinces.
Nyle was always there to lend a hand to his neighbors and friends and could fix and build anything. He was quick to trade out his family as farm labor to neighboring farmers in need, put in tobacco, get up eggs and scrape roads and driveways of snow.
Nyle was active in Woodland Baptist Church, Wake Forest where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, maintenance committee chairman and building committee chairman.
Nyle is survived by his wife Joyce, of 66 years; children Lisa Bailey (Joel), Constance Whitfield (Ronnie), Wendy Hart, Franklin Hart (Terri) eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two children, a daughter, Angela Ray and a son, Anthony Carl.
A celebration of his life was held on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church, 190 Woodland Church Road, Wake Forest. Viewing was Saturday, Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest.
