Nov. 11, 1929 — July 1, 2020
Sue Carroll Simpson, 90, died July 1, 2020, at Hillside Nursing Center after several years of declining health.
Bertie Sue was born on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 1929, in Wake Forest. She was the only child of Nathan Carroll and Thelma Coggin Holmes. As a child, Sue always thought the annual Veterans Day parade was in honor of, and to celebrate, her birthday.
Sue graduated from Wake Forest High School and Hardbarger Business College.
Married life took her away from Wake Forest for 32 years, but summers always brought her and her three children back to Birdie Lou Coggin, her grandmother, and her childhood home on Chestnut Avenue. She returned for good in 1984 at which time she went to work in Raleigh for the N.C. state government until her retirement.
Sue is survived by her children, Kenneth W. Simpson Jr. (Susan) of Jasper, Georgia, Larke Simpson Miller (Dan) of Cumming, Georgia, and Sammy Mark Simpson of Wake Forest; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; also her friend, Elsie Carter, who has been a real blessing to Sue and Sam in these last years.
The family would like acknowledge and thank the staff at Hillside Nursing Center for the care and attention given Sue for the past seven years.
A graveside service was held July 3 with internment in the Coggin family plot at Wake Forest Cemetery. Gary Vassar, pastor of South Main Baptist Chapel, officiated.
Bright Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
