Proverbs 29:23 (ESV)
“A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.”
Everyone wants to be successful. Whether it’s paying off all your debt, buying a new car, getting a new house or having the dream job. It’s not bad to have ambitions and wanting to be great. What’s important is the attitude that comes with it.
In this proverb, the verse says that those who put themselves above others will be brought down by God. The humble will retain honor because God will glorify their attitude to others. Men should not be proud because they truly have nothing to be proud of compared to God’s handiwork and creation.
That doesn’t mean that hard work doesn’t pay off. It means that we shouldn’t gloat or boast about it to others. Being selfish does not impress God. Showing humility pleases God.
We have to be more humble in our actions and words. Showing humility to others is the best way to lead others to Christ. Being selfish will steer people away from God, so we have to reach out to others through acts of service.
King Solomon had everything you could ever ask for: money, women, fame and power. However, using his wisdom, he warned others about not getting too conceited. In Proverbs 16:18 it says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Being caught up in how good we are can rub others the wrong way. We’re supposed to be a positive influence to those around us. That’s where humility comes in.
God showed great humility by sending His one and only Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. He took the form of a servant to give us eternal salvation. God could have stayed in the glorious abode of heaven and skip over all the pain and suffering He had to endure, but He chose to save us instead. We should have that same attitude when teaching others about the gospel.
This week, pray about how you can be more humble in your thoughts and actions. See what needs to be done around you and put others before yourself.
