RALEIGH — The Winternational Junior Series played two of Pinehurst oldest courses from Dec. 14-15 with Alan Van Asch of Raleigh winning his division and Wakefield High School senior Lotte Fox finishing runner-up in her division.

Van Asch claimed his first victory in the 2019-2020 season series. Van Asch’s rounds of 77 and 71 to total 148 narrowly edged out runner-up David Oliver of Pageland, South Carolina. Oliver was co-leading the division after Saturday’s first round score of 74. However, it was Van Asch’s bogey free, one-under par back nine that spelled the difference.

In the Girls Division, Kelley Topiwala of Matthews took home top honors. Her consistent rounds of 76 and 78 to total 154 was good enough of a seven shot margin over runner-up Fox. Topiwala’s opening round was highlighted by a bogey free back nine and earned her the low round award. Fox had the low round on Sunday at Course No. 1 shooting a 77.

In that same division, Heather Appelson of Heritage High School shot a 91 in the first round and an 80 in the second round to finish seventh overall with a total score of 171. Her high school teammate, Vivian Shillingsburg, shot a 114 in the first round and a 99 in the second round to finish 13th overall with a total score of 213.

The Winternational Junior Series will play its fourth event of the year on the newly renovated Pinehurst No. 4 course and will take place Jan. 4-5.
