Vikings ring in holidays with title

South Granville scores tourney championship with win vs. Rolesville

CREEDMOOR The South Granville Vikings defeated the Rolesville Rams 84-74 to claim the Columbia Bracket title in the 10th nnual South Granville Holiday Invitational on Dec. 28.

South Granville started the game with the signature pass from Micah Jones to a high-flying Kobe Jones, who slammed the ball through the goal for the points of the contest.

Bobby Pettiford followed by flying to the basket for a bucket and Wy’kise Allen scored with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Rolesville looked to Brandon Johnson in the first quarter for their first eight points. Darien Long chipped in a basket to tie the game at 10-all.

Pettiford and Johnson traded basket to keep the score even.

Micah Jones drilled back-to-back 3-pointers and Collin Tanner notched a three of his own to extend the lead to 24-14.

Donavon Martin picked up a basket for the Rams but South Granville closed in style with Pettiford finding Allen open for a basket.

South Granville had a 26-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The 3-pointers continued to rain from Micah Jones while Pettiford and Allen worked to score inside the arc.

Johnson and Martin tried to keep Rolesville close but the Vikings continued to make baskets. South Granville had a 45-37 lead at the half.

Micah Jones and Adrian Cearnel started the scoring for the Vikings in the third quarter. Long and Johnson helped Rolesville close the gap to 49-44 midway through the third quarter.

Pettiford started to take over the offense and scored a pair of baskets. Allen grabbed an offense rebound and went back up for a basket.

The Rams kept charging and inched closer with Long scoring on a jumper. The Rams had trimmed the lead to 55-51.

Pettiford again worked hard driving the lane, making the basket and drawing a foul. Allen added a pair of baskets while the South Granville defense shut down the Rams on the offensive end of the court.

South Granville had a 62-55 lead with one quarter remaining.

Allen passed the ball to Pettiford, who was breaking toward the basket. Pettiford finger rolled the ball into the basket. He then scored on a short jumper at the top of the key.

Micah Jones had been waiting all night for the opportunity to lob the ball to Pettiford. He saw the opening and sailed the ball high enough for Pettiford to send it straight down the hole for two points.

Johnson and the Rams continued to battle and closed the score to 68-66 when Long made a short jumper.

After Pettiford made a free throw, Daniel Morton applied pressure to the Rams as they tried to bring the ball up the court. Morton stripped the ball away and drove down the lane for a basket to give South Granville a little breathing room.

Allen added a basket for the Vikings but Long responded for the Rams. Micah Jones drilled a long-range three to push the lead to 76-68.

The Vikings spent the rest of the night at the free-throw line with Micah Jones, Allen, Kobe Jones and Pettiford sealing the 84-74 win for the Vikings.

South Granville remains undefeated at 12-0 with the tournament championship win. Rolesville fell to 8-4 with the loss.
