CREEDMOOR — Wakefield’s boys basketball team competed in the Navy Bracket of the South Granville Holiday Invitational tournament and finished third after beating Sanderson 61-59 on Saturday.
In the first game on Dec. 26, Wakefield defeated Northwood Temple Academy 80-64. All five starters scored in double digits with Vernon Fraley leading the pack at 18 points and nine rebounds.
The next day, Wakefield lost to Granville Central 78-66. It was a close match, 34-29, at halftime with Granville Central ahead.
Then Wakefield kept it close by the end of the third period with a deficit of 51-45. However, the Panthers ran away with the game at the end, outscoring the Wolverines 27-21 in the fourth quarter.
Wakefield avenged their earlier loss by beating Sanderson 61-59 in a nail-biter. Both Fraley and Brenon Rogers scored 17 points each, with Rogers accumulating eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Fraley was named all-tournament with an average of 17 points and 7.3 rebounds in three games. Rogers averaged 15.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.7 steals. Harper Strickland also played well with 13 points and 7.3 rebounds per game over three days.
After the tournament results, Wakefield finished 2019 with a record of 7-4 overall. The Wolverines are 4-0 on the road so far this season.
Wakefield will battle Southern Lee at home 7 p.m. Tuesday. Then the Wolverines will tip off NAC 6 conference play against Rolesville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
