Wakefield’s second quarter surge leads to blowout win

RALEIGH — Wakefield’s football team erupted in the second quarter with 29 points on their way to a 43-0 shutout win against Ben L. Smith High School at home last Friday.

The Wolverines torched the Golden Eagles through the air. Wakefield quarterback had an almost perfect game with 312 yards and five passing touchdowns along with 13 completions out of 17 attempts.

Juwan Bunch led the Wolverines in the air assault with three catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns. Nehemiah Jones had two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Rashuan Jones added four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. The senior also picked off an interception on defense.

Wakefield had nine different players run the ball against Smith. Coleman Kraske had the best performance of the night with only two carries for 31 yards and the only rushing touchdown of the game.

Joshua Sosanya had an interception on defense. Wakefield shut down Smith to just 109 total yards of offense and forced four total turnovers.

With the win, Wakefield improved to 4-2 overall, bouncing back from a 26-21 loss at Southern Durham the previous week. After a bye week, the Wolverines will have a NAC 6 conference showdown with Rolesville at home next Friday at 7 p.m.
