RALEIGH — We don’t know who will be in office come 2021, but after candidate filing ended last week, one thing is certain: Next year’s ballot will be a long one.

County commissioner and state legislators are among several elected positions up for grabs in 2020, an election year that will be dominated by a presidential election but will also have a dramatic impact on local policies.

In Congress, David Price will be pitted against Democrat challenger Daniel Ulysses Lockwood in the March 3 primary for the 4th House district. In the Republican primary, four candidates — Debesh Sarkar, Steve Loor, Robert Thomas and Nasir Shaikh — will square off against the Democrat victor in November.

Dozens of candidates filed for state legislature, which like Congress has new maps after court-ordered redistricting. Angela Bridgman and Sarah Crawford will be on the ticket for Democrats in Senate District 18. Republicans Scott McKaig and Larry Norman will face off in the primary for that district. Libertarian Jason Loeback also filed.

Voters next year will also select candidates for the Wake and Franklin boards of commissioners.

Democrats Jeremiah Pierce and incumbent Sig Hutchinson and Republican Greg Jones filed for District 1 of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, which covers a swath from Rolesville to Zebulon and Wendell. James West, a Democrat, is running unopposed for another term in District 5 (mostly covering Knightdale) while District 6, which includes Wake Forest, drew bids from Democrat incumbent Greg Ford and Republican Karen J. Weathers.

In Franklin County, voters will decide between Shelley Dickerson and Ginger Baker, both Democrats, or Republican Danny Pearce for an at-large seat on the board of commissioners. Districts 1, 3 and 5 will also be decided next year, but only one candidate filed for District 5.

Here is a list of candidates specific to The Wake Weekly coverage area. Names are in the order listed by the state board of elections.
