A Wilson County man was identified Monday as the victim of a head-on collision involving a tractor-trailer on N.C. 42 Friday.
Willie Harold Neal Sr., 77, of 7241 Neal Road outside Lucama, died at the scene of the wreck, which is just slightly more than a mile from his home.
According to Sgt. Bennie Pulliam III of the N.C. Highway Patrol, the wreck happened on N.C. 42 at 3:13 p.m. when Neal’s 2015 Toyota Corolla, traveling east, drifted into the path of a 1988 Kenworth tractor-trailer, traveling west, driven by Charles David Boswell of 7507 Flat Rock Road near Sims.
Pulliam said two motorists witnessed the crash.
“It looks like Neal drifted over into the tractor-trailer’s lane of travel and collided head-on,” Pulliam said, reading from a report made by investigating Trooper R.T. Edwards.
Immediately after impact, the tractor trailer-ran off the road, struck some trees and jackknifed.
The Neal vehicle was knocked off the road, coming to rest off the shoulder.
The truck, which had been hauling red mulch, had $15,000 in estimated damage. The car was destroyed, with $14,000 in damage.
Boswell was taken to Wilson Medical Center with injury to his hand, broken fingers and a head injury.
No charges will be filed in the wreck, Pulliam said.
